Shin-Etsu AQOAT®

Hypromellose Acetate Succinate (HPMCAS) is an enteric coating material which was first approved in Japan in 1987. As of January 2004, this product has been approved in Korea, several countries in Europe, and USA as well as in Japan.


Hypromellose is a non-toxic material which has been used in pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries for many years. Based on Hypromellose, acetyl and succinoyl groups are introduced to the hydroxyl groups of the backbone, and this constitutes Shin-Etsu AQOAT®, Hypromellose Acetate Succinate (HPMCAS).


There are six grades and we have different particle sizes (fine and granule) and chemical substitution levels of acetyl and succinoyl groups to obtain pH range from 5.5 to 6.5.


Shin-Etsu Aqoat & HME cleaner

The Hot Melt Extrusion (HME) is an upcoming technology in the pharmaceutical industry, especially for solubility enhancement for poorly soluble drugs. One of the major advantages of this technology is that it can be used in a continuous process. With new technologies come new challenges within the industry, and therefore Shin-Etsu has newly introduced the HME cleaner. This cleaner makes the cleaning process easier after the processing of solid dispersion by HME with enteric polymers such as Shin-Etsu AQOAT® (HPMCAS) and HPMCP®. It consists of hypromellose and other materials which have been widely accepted as pharmaceutical excipients. HME cleaner is highly safe for the operation and contributes to effective cleaning due to its high detergency and low residual properties. Shin-Etsu AQOAT® Applications

An enteric coating agent is used to protect drugs from degradation by gastric acid or to protect gastric mucosa from irritating drugs. Thus, an enteric coating agent is insoluble in gastric juice, and it immediately dissolves when the enteric preparation transfers to the small intestine. HPMCP (Hypromellose Phthalate) and Shin-Etsu AQOAT® (Hypromellose Acetate Succinate) is an introduction into the market as an alternative cellulose derivative for enteric coating.
